The Healer’s Apprentice  by Melanie Dickerson

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2010

Number of pages- 268

Age Group- Grade 7-10

Description of book- softcover, list price $9.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72143-7

Rose is the healer’s apprentice at Hagenheim Castle.  She doesn’t like the sight of blood, but she needs to prove herself.  She doesn’t want to marry any of the elderly bachelors and widows her mother wants her to marry.

Lord Hamlin, the future duke, falls for Rose when she takes care of his injury from a boar.  Hamlin is unable to act upon his feelings, because he is betrothed to a young lady in hiding.

Rose has fallen for Lord Hamlin, but she knows he is betrothed to another.  She needs God to help her determine her own destiny.  Can she do it?

About the author- Melanie Dickerson lives in Alabama with her husband and two daughters.  She has a bachelors degree in special education of the hearing impaired and has been a teacher and missionary.  Her novel has been a finalist seven times in Romance Writers of America sponsored contests.

My thoughts- I loved reading this book.  I thought it was a great idea to use the basic storyline of Sleeping Beauty.  Rose is a wonderful example of how the young ladies of today should behave.  She did have moments of weakness, as most of us do, but she was strong when it was most important, when Lord Rupert and Lord Hamlin presented temptation or were the temptations themselves.  Even when she had the chance to be with both of them she held to her morals with the knowledge that God was with her and would help her.

I thought this book was wonderful and I would highly recommend this book to all young ladies so they learn better ways to behave and treat romance.

Going Deep by Gordon MacDonald

Genre- Religionimage/Christian Life/Spiritual Growth

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 384

Age Group- Adult

Description of Book- paperback, list price $6.99, ISBN 978-0-7852-2608-6

Have you ever wanted to become a deep person in Christ?  This book is going to show you how, so be prepared to enjoy this book and don’t forget to take notes.

Gordon MacDonald uses the fictional setting from his book, Who Stole My Church?  As the priest he realizes his church is missing something.  Deep people.

Along with his wife, Gordon chooses a small group of people to meet once a week to cultivate into deep people.  The group, along with Gordon and his wife learn what spiritually deep people are like.  And excitement spreads to the rest of the church.

Author- Dr. Gordon MacDonald has written a number of books and has been a pastor over fifty years.  He lives with his wife, Gail, in New Hampshire.

My Thoughts- I haven’t read any of his books, but I was intrigued when I read the synopsis.  I want to be a deep person for God and I thought this book would help me do that.

One of the best parts of this book was that is was written as a novel, which made it much easier to read.  I thought it could be dry if it had been written as nonfiction.

Even though it may be written as a novel, there were many nuggets of information in each chapter.  It took many notes about how Gordon should be a rabbi like Jesus, the group learned about their temperaments, how to pray, and many other things.

I would like to see a workbook to go with this book.  It would help many readers become deep people if there was a guide they could use on a daily basis.

I highly recommend.

The Scroll by Grant R. Jeffrey and Alton L. Gansky

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 342

Age Group- Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $16.99, ISBN 978-0-307-72926-2

Here is a link to an excerpt.

Dr. David Chambers no longer wants to be a biblical archeologist, so he becomes a professor.

Abram Ben-Judah, an old mentor, asks him to come back to Israel to help him find the treasures written about in the Copper Scroll.  David feels he has no choice but to go.

Will this help renew his desire to be a biblical archeologist, his faith in God, and his former fiancée?

About the authors-

Grant R. Jeffrey lives in Toronto with his wife, Kaye.  He has written more than two dozen books and is a respected teacher of biblical archeology and prophecy/eschatology.

Alton L. Gansky lives in California with his wife.  He has been involved in more than 30 novels with nine nonfiction.

My thoughts- I like reading suspense and Christian based books.  This book didn’t live up to either of those for me.  There was suspense here and there, but there wasn’t as much as I thought there was going to be based on the cover of the book.  Most of the high suspense didn’t happen until the last quarter of the book.

I know Dr. Chambers used to believe more in God, so I thought there would be more from the other characters to lead him back to God.  I was glad to see that by the end of the book that he does come back to God and become a better man.

I had a hard time putting this book down, so I recommend The Scroll.

Why Church Matters: Discovering Your Place in the Family of God by Joshua Harris

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2004, 2011

Number of pages- 140

Age Group- Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $13.99, ISBN 978-1-60142-384-9

Church is an important place for Christians, to help us grow and use our gifts.  In this book Joshua Harris shows us how to find the right church and how to worship when we are in church.

This book includes:

  • How to get the most from the our day of worship
  • Ten questions to ask when choosing a church
  • Why we need a local church

About the author-  Joshua Harris has written books on dating, marriage and other topics.  He is a senior pastor in Maryland at Covenant Life where he lives with his wife and children.

My thoughts- I have read several of Joshua Harris’s books before and enjoyed them, so I was eager to read this one as well.

This is such a short book that it doesn’t take very long to read.  I enjoyed reading Chapter Five, “Choosing Your Church.”  We shouldn’t be going from church to church each week and this chapter lists and explains ten questions we can ask to help us choose the best church for us.

The problem I had was in Chapter Six, “Rescuing Sunday.”  Right away in this chapter Joshua Harris mentions that he thinks Christians need not keep the Old Testament Laws about the Sabbath.  I thought we were supposed to keep all ten commandments.  Does this mean that we shouldn’t follow the other nine commandments?  I sincerely hope not.  Our world would not be the same.

I would recommend this book as a guide for picking a church, but beyond that I would keep what you know about the Bible and believe in mind as you read this book.

The Voice New Testament: Step into the Story of Scripture

The Voice New Testament by Ecclesia Bible Society

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 413

Age Group- For those who can read

Description of Book- paperback, list price $6.99, ISBN 978-1-4185-5076-9

The Voice is a result of 27 Bible scholars, 51 writers and 36 other contributors getting together to bring us a work of literature.  This version has song, poetry, truth and wisdom to bring you to God with your whole being.

Included is:

  • Four different reading plans for Advent, Lent and Ester, in 24 weeks, and daily readings for personal growth
  • Notes with a topical index
  • Screenplay format to identify speaker and dialogue

and more.

My Thoughts- I was very excited to receive this book.  It is important to me to try different versions of the Bible, so I can find the version that helps me learn and understand the most.  And I believe I have found a version that I am proud to have on my bookshelf and to share with others when they ask me for a good version of the Bible.

What makes this version so good is the use of today’s language, identification of who is speaking, and extra information which gives the reader more.  This Bible is one that I can sit down with and read without becoming disinterested.

Sometimes I feel this version reads too much like a novel, but then as I read on I am awed and inspired and I want to continue reading.

I highly recommend this Bible for everyone.

Description of book- softcover, list price $9.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-7183-3

The suspense is growing as Koren, the latest Starlighter, decides to decides to use the Exodus star to help her people and become free from the dragon king, Taushin.  Will Koren become free from Taushin and help her people or will she jeopardize all the humans on Starlight?

Jason and Elyssa are learning more about Taushin’s plans and how the humans might need to have an alliance with the other dragons to be saved.  Elyssa learns that her diviner powers are linked with the Exodus star.  Will they be able join with the dragons to save the humans or will the dragons stick together?

About the author- Bryan Davis lives in western Tennessee where he lives with his wife and seven children.  He has written the series, Dragons in Our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Echoes from the Edge.

My thoughts- This has been by far the best book in the series.  The only negative which I can find (which is a really big one), is that a day after I finished the book I couldn’t remember what I had read and I don’t have much of a desire to read it again.  It is really too bad, because I really did enjoy reading and learning about how Koren, Elyssa, Jason and the dragons worked together to work against the dragon, King Taushin, and other dragons.

I do wonder if there is going to be another book, this one ended with loose ends.  I want to learn what happens between Koren and King Taushin, Elyssa and Jason, and the dragons in the humans world.

I recommend this book, because it is the next one in the series and it is good as it is being read.

Culture Shift: The Battle for the Moral Heart of America by R. Albert Mohler JR

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2008, 2011

Number of pages- 185

Age Group- Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $12.99, ISBN 978-1-60142-381-8

In this revised and expanded edition Dr. Mohler shows us how our world is changing culturally.

He talks about:

  • politics
  • terrorism
  • education
  • dishonesty
  • abortion
  • technology
  • atheism

and more with clarity and passion by using the Bible and other sources.

This book will help the reader understand how our culture is transforming into faithlessness, increased immorality, and rejection of the absolute truth.

About the author- Dr. R Albert Mohler JR. writes regularly on AlbertMohler.com and is the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.  He has been quoted in many newspapers and has been on different news shows.  He lives in Kentucky with his wife and children.

My thoughts- Once I got passed the first five chapters on politics (not something I’m into), this book was very interesting.

Chapter ten was the best chapter.  Being called, “Are We Raising a Nation of Wimps?” this chapter was all about how parents are over protecting their children.  As a parent, I can see how easy it would be to constantly protect children, but I know that I need to trust my children to God and let their lives progress with me looking on.

The chapter on dishonesty was eye opening.  It has become so easy for us as a society to lie outright or stretch the truth.  It reminds me of the father in the Swiss Family Robinson who talked about telling the truth even when joking.  I am making sure we use that philosophy in our lives.

All in all I would recommend this book.  It has a little bit of everything for everyone from politics to education to technologies.

Number of pages- 432

Age Group- Young Adult, 13-16

Description of book- softcover, list price $9.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-71837-6

The new dragon prince, Taushin, has hatched and he is busy trying to get Koren away from Jason, because Taushin needs her starlighter abilities.  Jason and Koren are on their way to the Northlands to try to find the one who can help them to free the slaves.  Elyssa and Wallace are trying to get to Jason to help him.

Is Taushin going to succeed in taking Koren away from Jason?  Are Elyssa and Wallace ever going to find Jason and Koren?  Are the human slaves ever going to be free from the dragons?  Read on to find out.

About the author- Bryan Davis lives in western Tennessee where he lives with his wife and seven children. He has written the series, Dragons in Our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Echoes from the Edge.
My thoughts- This book was a bit hard to get into as I didn’t remember the first book very well.  So, I recommend to read the first book shortly before you read this one.

In this book Jason and Elyssa’s characters were developed and I was excited to see how strong and dedicated they were to helping the humans in the dragon’s world.  I enjoyed learning more about the dragons.  Arxad was a very kind dragon, which I was not expecting for a world where the dragons have slaves.

I would recommend this book.  And I can’t wait to read the next book, Diviner.  I want to know what happens to the humans; Jason, Koren, Elyssa and the dragons; Arxad, Taushin, and Magnar.

Sherman: The Ruthless Victor by Agostino Von Hassell and Ed Breslin

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 169

Age Group- Adult and upper high school

Description of Book- hardback, list price $19.99, ISBN 978-1-5955-5133-7

Are you interested in learning about William Tecumseh Sherman, but you aren’t a big Civil War history buff?  Then you should read this book.

This book is easy reading and is filled with details of his life from his birth to around the end of the Civil War.

You will learn:

  • How much General Grant stuck up for him.
  • How his wife didn’t want to move around the country.
  • How Sherman was always focused on the mission at hand.
  • How he was always destined for military work and not civilian work.

About the Authors-

Agostino Von Hassell has lived in the United States going to Columbia University and Columbia Journalism School.  He is currently the president of The Repton Group LLC.  He is an expert in national security, terrorism issues and problems in global trade.

Ed Breslin lives in New York and is a writer.

My Thoughts- What I have learned previously about Sherman came from textbooks when I was in primary and secondary school.  I was pleased with everything I learned from Sherman’s youth as a foster child through his “March to the Sea.”  After the separation of his family after his father’s death, I was unsure how he was going to fare, but he had a great foster family and was well educated.

Sherman wasn’t a religious person, which didn’t work well for his wife.  She was still able to go to church, but in this she was never able to get him to become a Catholic, as she was.  He did go to an Episcopal church for a while.

My favorite parts of this book were the pictures and the maps.  I always enjoy seeing the subject and the paths they take.

I highly recommend this book.  It would be great for homeschooling families.

Raised Right: How I Untangled My Faith from Politics by Alisa Harris

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 230

Age Group- Teen/Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $14.99, ISBN 978-0-307-72965-1

Alisa Harris was raised in a conservative Republican Christian family that actively picketed abortion clinics, helping fight moral decay and injustice in America.

As she grew she thought the right people in power would help the country, but now as an adult she is unsure what she should believe politically.  She wants to stay true to her parents and Christian beliefs.

When reading this book put your political beliefs aside and concentrate on how you can focus your Christian beliefs in the political world.  If you are not of this latest generation, this book will show you how they are viewing politics and their faith.

About the author- Alisa Harris lives in New York City where she is a journalist.  She graduated from college in 2007 and has worked as a college instructor.  World, Albuquerque Journal, the Detroit Free Press, and the Farmington Daily Times have published her works.

My thoughts-

I had a hard time getting into this book.  I thought it would have more info on how she actually separated her faith from her political views, but it seemed to just have stories of her life that must have led to her decision, but she wasn’t clear..

I do commend Alisa on how firm she has always been in her Christian faith and how she has worked her political views into it.  It shows how strongly she respects her parents and God.

The part of the book that I liked the best was the “Epilogue,’ where she talks about what she will pass on to her children that her parents taught her; to care, love (with action) and take heart.

I personally didn’t like this book, but I think there are many people who might.  Readers will be able to understand the thought process of how of the newest Christian voters will choose to vote.

Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest by Chuck Black

Genre- Youth/Teen Fiction
Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest by Chuck Black
Series- The Knights of Arrethtrae, book 6, but it can be read independently of the series
Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah
Copyrighted- 2010
Number of pages- 182
Age Group- Youth/Teen
Description of book- paperback, list price $9.99, ISBN 978-1-60142-129-6
Extras- Discussion Questions and piano music for the “The Final Call” by Emily Elizabeth Black
Book Summary- Told from the perspective of Cedric of Chessington, Sir Rowan and the Camerian Conquest, is filled with knights, good and evil, and mystical creatures.
In Cameria, Sir Rowan is the best tournament knight, but he is left for dead after he is attacked.  Mariah takes care of Sir Rowan and he rededicates his life to the Prince.  As Sir Rowan and his countrymen begin to take back their country from the Dark Knight.  Sir Lijah comes and tells him he is needed elsewhere.
What will Sir Rowan chose? Read the book!
About the author- Chuck Black is the author of the Kingdom series and Knights of Arithtrae series. He lives with his wife, Andrea and their five children in North Dakota.
My thoughts- Would I recommend? Yes. I recommend this book to people in the age group listed and also to adults, as the reader can see the consequences of what extreme pride can do to you.  I am sad to know the series is ending.
I love reading these books and my favorite part in the book is the “author commentary.”  After reading the book the commentary pulls everything together and I can then meditate upon the message and how I can apply it in my own life.
Sir Rowan sets a perfect example of how extreme pride can cause your life to change in an instant.  His life as a tournament knight was very self-centered.  He thought he deserved it, because he had been a street urchin.  He thought his heart was still with the Prince, but he had been deceived.  We need to be mindful as Christians that we are not living our lives in pride, because life can change for the worse when you least expect it.
I plan on acquiring the books in this series and the Kingdom Series, because I plan on using them as a teaching tool for my children.

What Are You Waiting For?: The One Thing No One Ever Tells You About Sex by Dannah Gresh

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 178

Age Group- Teen/Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $10.99, ISBN 978-1-60142-331-3

Extras- Discussion Questions for each chapter at the end of the book

Are you unsure of God’s thoughts on sex?  Then let Dannah Gresh show you the ancient Hebrew words and what they mean to you and your sexual relationships.

In this book Dannah Gresh will talk about:

  • the dangers with pornography
  • where to draw the line with kissing, fondling, and oral sex
  • how to identify the lies associated with lesbianism
  • what happens when you have a friendship with benefits

About the author- Dannah Gresh is a contributor to FamilyLife Today and Midday Connection.  She has written And the Bride Wore White and she enjoys talking about purity with teens and young adults.  She lives with her husband and children in Pennsylvania.

My thoughts-

When I was single I wish I had been able to read a book like this.  If I had had a book like this then I would have known the love of God and how much more important that is than any love from a person.  And how God’s love will help me to love myself and my boyfriend/spouse.

This should be required reading for all girls when they are in high school, whether it be in school or church classes.  They will learn why they should not have “friends with benefits” or why pornography shouldn’t be watched.

The chapter I thought was the best was, “The Line,” and it talked about where you should draw the line with kissing, fondling, and oral sex.  As women we need to know exactly where we will draw the line and to go no further.

I would highly recommend this book to teens and young adults.

The Quotable Rogue: The Ideals of Sarah Palin in Her Own Words by Matt Lewis

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 192

Age Group- Adult/College Age

Description of Book- paperback, list price $12.99, ISBN 978-1-5955-5356-0

Over the years Sarah Palin has been criticized and celebrated in the main stream media.  Matt Lewis has gathered together many of Sarah Palin’s quotes in this small, but powerful book.  He has added quotes from many subjects such as abortion, civil rights, family, media, and Tina Fey.  It doesn’t matter the party you are affiliated with, this book of quotes will help you learn about her in her own words and not the words of others.

About the Author- Matt Lewis blogs, writes, and is a commentator in Virginia.  He is a Senior Contributor for the Daily Caller.  He has been on Fox News and MSNBC,  as well as other television and radio shows.

My Thoughts- I have seen and read a little bit about about Sarah Palin over the years, so when this book was made available to me, I was excited.  I have wanted to learn more about her and what better way than in her own words.

I thought Matt Lewis did a wonderful job of collecting good and memorable quotes.  When I looked at the table of contents, I don’t think he missed a single subject that should be covered.  Since the publisher is a Christian publishing house, I would have thought there would have been more than three pages on Sarah Palin’s faith.

I would recommend this book to all people who want to learn more about Sarah Palin in her own words, without the negativity the media often gives to celebrities or people who speak their mind.

About the illustrator- Jung Sun Hwang has drawn for The Manhwa Bible and other books in Korea. He also has a degree in Architectural Engineering.

My thoughts-

I used to avoid reading graphic novels, but when I learned that there were Christian graphic novels, I decided I would give them a try. This book was a lot of fun to read.  I really enjoyed the manga style in this book.  I wasn’t sure if I like the style originally, but I am really beginning to enjoy it.

I would agree that there is strong artwork and emotions shown in this book using the manga style. I really enjoyed this book, because I could see what the manga style was showing. I could easily tell who the characters were and how it related to Numbers, Joshua, Judges and Ruth.  This style is perfect for someone who needs to see illustrations to understand the story better.  This is a great way for reluctant readers to become involved with reading.

I would recommend Walls, Brawls and the Great Rebellion, because graphic novels are becoming more popular. As graphic novels become more popular it will be more important than ever to have Christian graphic novels for people to read.

All is not gloom and doom though, Kevin McCullough does state what President Obama can do to change his presidency for the better.

About the Author- Kevin McCullough has written many different columns in publications such as, Chicago Tribune, New York Post, and Christianity Today.  This is his third book.  He is also the host of “The Kevin McCullough Show” and “Baldwin/McCullough Radio.”

My Thoughts- Well for starters, let me say, WOW.  There certainly is a lot more to President Obama than I thought there was.  I knew about the economic bailouts and the healthcare package, but this book has shown me there is so much more to President Obama’s morals and loyalties.  Chapter fourteen: “Re-creating the Definition of Person” was horrific as a parent, Christian and person to read.  I cannot believe that U.S. citizens are paying for foreign abortions or President Obama’s view on how doctors should care for their patients.  President Obama also doesn’t respect the U.S. by alienating our allies and becoming soft with radical Islam.

Would I recommend?  Yes.  I think every person of voting age should read this book, because voters need to become aware of what President Obama is doing on behalf of our country and watching the nightly news will not give you that.

Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 185

Age Group- Adult, (can also be for highschoolers)

Description of book- softcover, list price $12.99, ISBN 978-0-310-33207-7

Are you a fan or a follower of Jesus?  Kyle Idleman is going to show you what it is to be a follower and not a fan, as many of us are.  This book begins with a must read prologue and quickly moves onto part one.  In part one, you must decide whether or not you are a fan or a follower.  Be honest!  Part two is “an invitation to follow” and Part three, “following Jesus. wherever. whenever. whatever.”

About the author- Kyle Idleman currently works as a teaching pastor at Southeast Christian Church, the fifth largest church in America.  He lives with his wife and four children.

My thoughts-

I really enjoyed this book.  After I finished this book I have decided that I am a fan who needs to work much harder at being a follower.  Not a Fan has shown me time and time again that there is so much more to being a follower of Jesus.

Each chapter is set up to it talks a bit about Jesus and some of his fans/followers and then you learn about the difference between a fan and a follower, then decide which you are.  Later in the book it shows how you need to follow Jesus.

The testimonies at the end of some chapters are good.  They show how Jesus has truly changed peoples’ lives.  They are also a testament to Kyle Idleman and how important this subject is to him.  It is very fun to read a book that the author is very passionate about and it is evident in Not a Fan.  It makes me passionate about being a follower and not a fan.

Would I recommend? This book should be read by one and all.  Not a Fan definitely should read by teenagers and used in their Sabbath classes, so they will always know how to be a follower of Jesus and not a fan.

hungry for God: Hearing God’s voice in the ordinary and everyday By Margaret Feinber

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 185

Age Group- Adult, college age

Description of book- softcover, list price $12.99, ISBN 978-0-310-33207-7

Extra- Discussion questions at the end the book for each chapter

Written in only six chapters, Margaret Feinberg shows us how to be spiritually hungry for God and then how to recognize and prepare for it on a daily basis.  The chapters, “Unforgettable Invitation,” “Kairos Moments,” “Shaped by God’s Voice,” Readiness,” “The Language of God,” and “Have You Heard?” are the different ways in which we need to listen and observe God on a daily basis.

From the back of the book: “Learning to hear God’s voice isn’t as much a destination as it is a journey and if you travel far enough, you’ll find yourself abiding in the presence of God.”

About the author- Margaret Feinberg lives in Colorado with her husband and dog.  She is a writer and speaker and has been named on of the “Thirty Emerging Voices” of Christian leaders by Charisma magazine.

My thoughts-

My favorite chapter was, “The Language of God.”  This chapter was divided up into the many ways  that God speaks to us.  I enjoyed reading Margaret Feinberg’s reflections and learning the many ways that God communicates with us if we are willing to listen.  I thought that “God Thoughts” and “Nature” were the best ones, because to me, they are two of the more obvious ones that may get over looked in our daily life.   To get thoughts from God we need to pray, be quiet and listen.  God whispers, so we need to listen for the quiet words.  Going outside and being a part of nature is also a way that we can observe the awesomeness of God.  It doesn’t need to be in a park or in your yard, you can just look out the window and observe.

Would I recommend? Yes, I would highly recommend this book by Margaret Feinberg, because we need to know how to satisfy our spiritual hunger and this book can help us do that.

31 Days of Power (Learning to Live in Spiritual Victory) by Ruth Myers with Warren Myers

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2003, 2011 First Trade Paperback Edition

Number of pages- 158

Age Group- Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $12.99, ISBN 978-1-60142-338-2

As followers of Jesus we are involved in a battle with the enemy.  Knowing the power of God and how to use it is the way to resist Satan and his ways.  This book is complete with 31 days of devotionals and the information on how to apply it in your daily life.  This book includes devotions on your armor and how to wear it plus the goodness and power of God.  Get ready to learn the truth!

About the author- Ruth Myers and her late husband, Warren wrote books/devotionals and served with the Navigators in Asia.

My thoughts-

I had a hard time getting into this book.  I thought that since this book is a devotional each day would list a Bible verse and information, not a lot of Bible verses and all the information at the end of the book.

Although I had a difficult time getting into the book, it is important for us to know how to resist Satan and wear God’s armor.  There is more than a week dedicated to learning about the armor we must wear.

Would I recommend?  I would only chose this book if you are interested in reading a number of verses per day and then learning how to apply the verses at the end of the thirty days.

Copyrighted- 2011

Number of pages- 146

Age Group- Adult/Older Teen

Description of Book- paperback, list price $14.99, ISBN 978-1-4002-0254-6

Previously released as The Barbarian Way, Unleashed is about showing the individual the way to live life “the barbarian way.”  Erwin Raphael McManus shows the way to give your complete life to God, thus fulfilling everything your heart has ever desired in a relationship with God.  It may not be the easiest way but it is the way that we need to be in our relationship with God and Jesus.

About the Author- Erwin Raphael McManus is a native from El Salvador, who currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and children.  He plays an active roll in McManus Studios and also Mosaic in Los Angeles.

My Thoughts- I had a difficult time getting into this book.  I thought the book was well written, but the flow and writing style was not enough to capture my undivided attention.

The message of the book is very important though, because we do need to live a life “the barbarian way.”  It has been for far too many years that we as Christian people in industrialized nations have chosen to live a safe Christian life.    We do need to live for God the way he would like us to live and follow him, not our way.

I do think that everyone should try this book, because we need to change our way of thinking about our relationship with God.

About the author- Young Shin Lee founded the Korean Cultural Research Center, serves at the Korean Defense Graduate School Church and has a master degree.  He has written The Manhwa Bible in Korean.

About the illustrator- Jung Sun Hwang  has drawn for The Manhwa Bible and other books in Korea.  He also has a degree in Architectural Engineering.

My thoughts-

I have always avoided reading the ever popular graphic novels, but when I learned that there were Christian graphic novels, I decided I would give them a try.  I really liked what I read and saw in this book.

The graphic novels are in the “manga” style, which is Japanese term for “comic.”  These books are unlike the comics I grew up with as they are published in black and white with strong artwork and emotions in a book format.

I would agree that there is strong artwork and emotions shown in this book using the “manga” style.  I really enjoyed this book, because I could see what the manga style was showing.  I could easily tell who the characters were and how it related to Genesis and Exodus.

I would recommend Names, Games, and the Long Road Trip, because graphic novels are becoming more popular. As graphic novels become more popular it will be more important than ever to have Christian graphic novels for people to read.

My thoughts-

I only wish that I had been able to read this book when I was a young unmarried woman.  I know I would have been able to grow in my relationship with God and pray for my future husband and better my marriage for it.

The layout of this book was great!  I really enjoy being able to read about first hand experiences and this book was full of them.  The women’s prayers were truly a testament to the power of prayer.  I thought that the addition of a specific prayers dedicated to the husband and reader, along with discussion questions made the book perfectly complete.

This is a book all young women and unmarried women should read.  I know I am going to share this book with my younger sisters and daughter.  I want the young women and their future husbands to have a wonderful, strong relationship with God.

Description of Book- paperback, list price $15.99, ISBN 978-0-7852-3165-3

Extras- Extensive Notes section

Have you ever had question that you wanted to ask God, but you didn’t know where to go?

A Conversation with God, covers 55 of what may be the most commonly asked questions.  Divided into five sections, the 55 questions are answered by God, Jesus and other key figures in biblical history.

Some questions are:

“Is being unique good or bad?”

“How can we experience peace?”

“What should our political role be?”

About the Author- Alton Gansky has been a firefighter, Baptist minister, and writer of more than 20 books.  He has been a Christy Award finalist and an Angel Award winner.  Alton Gansky lives in California.

My Thoughts-

I thought this book was well researched and written.  There were several areas I did not agree on.  One was going to heaven after you die.  The other was about what happens in hell.  Considering there are many different ways to view the Bible, having only 2 differences was remarkable to me.

God and Jesus answer most of the questions in this book, which was great, but the addition of of people from the Bible really added an interesting aspect.  I enjoyed learning more about God from their perspective.  Their addition really helped to make this book interesting for me.  I don’t think I would have enjoyed this book as much as I did without them.

I would recommend this book to those who have questions for God, but don’t know where to look.

Extras- Study Guide, Chat with Liz

There are different types of women in the Bible, both good and bad.  Liz Curtis Higgs has decided to focus this book on the “bad” women.  This book focuses on Eve, Potiphar’s wife, Delilah, Lot’s wife, Michal, Sapphira, Jezebel, woman at the well, Rahab and the sinful woman.  These women were each “bad” in their own ways.

Bad Girls of the Bible explains each of these women and the discussion at the end of each chapter enables the reader to explore more.

About the author-  Liz Curtis Higgs is an author of 26 books and has spoken to audiences all over the world.  She has received a Christy Award and Grace in Thine Eyes was one of the Top Five Best Christen Fiction by Library Journal in 2006.  Her website is www.LizCurtisHiggs.com

My thoughts-

I thought this was an awesome book.  I really enjoyed reading the modern story, the biblical story, and the short study section at the end of each chapter.

My favorite part of each chapter was the study section.  I know there is a little bit of a “bad” girl in me, so I knew it was important to use the lessons learned and questions to delve into my own life to make sure that I learned from these women of the past.  I know I have learned from these women, so I can be a “good” girl.

This is a book that all women should read, so they know that God is still there for them.  Women can learn from the past to do better in the future.

I have always avoided reading the ever popular graphic novels, but when I learned that there were Christian graphic novels, I decided I would give them a try.

The graphic novels are in the “manga” style, which is Japanese term for “comic”  These books are unlike the comics I grew up with as they are published in black and white with strong artwork and emotions in a book format.

I would agree that there is strong artwork and emotions in the manga style, but I had a difficult time figuring out who each person was as they looked so much the same.  It would have helped if the person speaking would say the name of the person they were speaking to.  I did think the basic storyline was good

I would recommend The Coming Storm, because graphic novels are becoming more popular.  As graphic novels become more popular it will be more important than ever to have Christian graphic novels for people to read.

About the Author- Alex Marestaing lives in California with his family. He has written for The Walt Disney Company and the Los Angeles Times. In July he will be releasing a sequel to this book called, Izzy’s Pop Star Plan: The Album

My Thoughts-

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:6 (New King James)

I recently had this has a memory verse and I thought it was perfect for this book, because as a pop star this is the problem that Izzy is facing. Izzy is a girl who does her best at following God in all of her ways and she has the support of her family and friends to help her through the hard times. She knows that God has specific plans for her and even though she detours sometimes she knows where she needs to go, which is what I like about her.

I liked how this book was set up like a blog, so that it worked both as a devotional and novel.

I would recommend this book and I can’t wait for the next one.

Number of pages- 327
Age Group- Teen/Adult
Description of Book- paperback, list price $15.99, ISBN 978-1-5955-5353-9
Extras- Bibliography and Eulogies

Mary Beth Brown wrote this book using interviews and Ronald Reagan’s own words. She shows how Reagan’s devotion to God helped him as a child, adult and a politician. Ronald Reagan always had a strong belief in God, which is shown in the eulogies by his children and others at the end of the book.

About the Author- Mary Beth Brown writes a nationally syndicated column, speaks to Christian and Conservative audiences, and lives in Arizona with her husband and kids.

My Thoughts- I thought this book was very good. I have always wanted to learn more about Ronald Reagan’s faith and this was certainly the book to do it. One of the most important things I learned from this book was the support network Ronald Reagan had. He always had people to turn to that supported him and helped him grow in his faith in God. He passed that knowledge and devotion to God onto his children. It was fun reading the parts that showed how much Nancy Reagan was valued by him and his first children, Maureen and Michael.

Ronald Reagan’s relationship with his mother showed me how I need to be with my children to raise them to follow God.

I would recommend this book.

“Taking back your faith from the American dream” Taken from the front of the book this quote encompasses this book.

Jesus wanted his disciples to leave everything to spread the gospel. In this book David Platt show us how we live the gospel according to our cultural preferences. And he shows how one church started living according to the gospel.

About the author- David Platt lives with his wife and family in Birmingham, Alabama where he is the pastor of The Church at Brook Hills. He holds a doctorate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

My thoughts-
I thought the best part of this book was the last chapter, “The Radical Experiment.” In this chapter David Platt shows us how to implement his plan for one year. The plan has five parts.
“ 1. pray for the entire world
2. read through the entire Word
3. sacrifice your money for a specific purpose
4. spend your time in another context
5. commit your life to a multiplying community”
I thought it was a great idea to take a year to do this experiment, because it does take time to develop habits. I know I am going to fill out the commitment in the back of the book and make my plans to live the life Jesus wants me to live.

Would I recommend? I would recommend this book to people who are ready to live a life for Jesus.

Extra- Discussion questions at the end of each chapter

Does what kind of music we listen to matter?

Do I have to wear a dress/suit to church?

The Bible answers these questions and many more.

In this book Mark Matlock uses his experiences and Bible verses to answer these questions and more. He will show us that while we know the big sins we also need to remember the little ones such as pride.

About the author- Mark Matlock is an author, teacher, husband and father. He teaches at PlanetWisdom conferences for teens. He lives in Texas with his wife and kids.

My thoughts-
Although I had a difficult time getting into the book, it was informative.

One of the chapters I liked the best was chapter six,‘What does it look like to “do justice"?' I thought this chapter was one of the most important, because over time I have had a problem with judging people as God will do. I need to remember not to give judgment, but give justice and help restore people in their walk with God.

Would I recommend? I would recommend this book for teens. This book would work for individual and group study. The questions at the end each chapter when written out and studied will help a person know exactly what God wants of us.
