Duplicate This!: Showing Your Friends How to Live Like Jesus by Andy Braner

Genre- JUVENILE/NONFICTION / Religion / Christianity / Christian Living

Series- Invert

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2008

Number of pages- 272

Age Group- Older Juvenile and Young Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $12.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-27754-5

Jesus wants us to make disciples of others.  Duplicate This! shows the reader the basics of discipleship and how to make a disciple.

There are many spiritual questions your friends may have and this book will help you be ready.  Some of the topics in the book are:

  • What are the requirements for being a disciple?
  • Can males and females disciple each other
  • Do prayers work?
  • Do we have to go to church?

Sample from the Book!

About the author- Andy Braner speaks at camps and conferences for kids all over the world and is the director of Kanakuk Colorado Kamp

My thoughts- Andy Braner did a great job of combining his stories and life with the knowledge of how to disciple to and with others.  One of the best points that he made was to basically not rant and rave Christianity at the person you are discipling to, it is better to walk the walk.

I enjoyed the chapters on prayer, finding an accountability partner, how to love others as yourself, and needing good Bible studies.  I didn’t agree with his way of giving tithes and his chapter on the Bible was too radical for me.  I think the Bible is something important to learn from and we can really use it in today’s world.

I do think this book has important ideas about discipling that everyone needs to know.  I recommend this book, because it conveys the ideas well, so check out this book and others in the Invert series.

The Radical Question/A Radical Idea by David Platt

The Radical Question and A Radical Idea

Genre- Christian Living

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 126

Age Group- Adult

Description of book- hardback, list price $9.99, ISBN 978-1-60142-489-1

There are two books in one this book.

The Radical Question  is an introduction to the challenge set forth by David Platt, “What is Jesus worth to you?”

Radical Idea is an introduction to Radical Together, which shows readers that the church is for people not performances or professionals.

Excerpt from this book.

Website for the Book

About the author- David Platt currently lives in Birmingham with his wife and their children.  He is the pastor of the Church at Brook Hills.  He is the author of Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream and Radical Together: Unleashing the People of God for the Purpose of God.

My thoughts- I have read some of David Platt’s work and I was excited to be able to read this book.  I was disappointed though, because $9.99 is an awful lot of money to pay for a snippet of Radical and Radical Together.  On the other hand, there is just enough written that I wanted to read more.  I wanted to read the whole books.

I learned a lot about how David Platt thinks about how we should minister as Jesus did and how our churches should be for the people and not the weekly performances or worship bands.

I just wish that these two books in one, had been the two whole books (including a workbook).

This book really wasn’t for me as it left me wanting the complete versions and the price is so high.  It might be the right book for you.

Call of a Coward: The God of Moses and the Middle-Class Housewife by Marcia Moston

Genre- RELIGION/Christian Life/Spiritual Growth

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 184

Age Group- Adult

Description of Book- paperback, list price $15.99, ISBN 978-0-8499-4730-8

Marcia Moston never wanted to go on a foreign mission.  Her husband wanted to go to Guatemala.  She fought against the trip, but she knew that God was leading them and would be there for them.

They lived in a Mayan village and later they went on a mission trip to Vermont.  Marcia Moston learned that God is the same today as he was in the times of Jonah, Gideon, and David- persistent.

Call of a Coward is both humorous and thought-provoking and will show you how God is always with us and how our attitudes can change.

Author- Marcia Moston currently lives in South Carolina with her husband.  They have five grown children.  She is a winner of the 2010 Women of Faith Writing Contest.

My Thoughts- I have often thought about what life would be like if our family were missionaries.  Marcia Moston has helped me see what life as a reluctant missionary is like.  It may be difficult, but as time goes by life gets better.

I enjoyed the detail and how much God was truly involved in the Mostons’ life.  My younger sister went on a trip to Guatemala and to some of the places the Mostons went.  It was neat seeing these places through the eyes of different people.

One thing I would really would have liked to know about in this book are the years they spent in Guatemala and Vermont.

I really enjoyed reading this book.  I feel as if I have the knowledge necessary to be a missionary whether it be in another country or in the United States.  Please find a copy today.

The Blue Door by Christa Kinde

http://media.zondervan.com/images/product/original/9780310724193.JPGGenre- Juvenile Fiction/General

Series- Threshold Series

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 272

Age Group- 11 and up

Description of book- hardback, list price $14.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72419-3

Fourteen-year-old Prissie is prepared for a hot, boring summer, since her friend lives far away and her brothers are always rowdy.  She is looking forward to going to the mailbox daily, where she can visit with the mailman, her friend, Milo.

One day she sees a young boy watching her as she is on the way to the mailbox.  She doesn’t know he is an angel (she’s not supposed to be able to see him).

By being able to see Koki, she soon learns of the other angels in town.  There is a spiritual battle beginning and she will have a part in it, only she and the angels don’t know what it is.

Excerpt from the Book!

About the author- Christa Kinde currently lives in California with her family.  She has written fifteen volumes in the Women of Faith study guide series  She has also written study guides and workbooks for authors such as Max Lucado.  Her website is www.christakinde.wordpress.com

My thoughts- I don’t know a lot about angels and all the different kinds there are, but this book was tastefully written.  I have read several books recently about humans and angels, and they included romance and high infatuation, so this again was tastefully written.

I’m glad I started this book early in the day, because it was hard to put down.  And towards the end of the book I wanted to keep reading to learn why Prissie can see the angels and what purpose she will serve.

The only part about this book I didn’t like was the infatuation Prissie had with Milo.  I don’t think middle-grade readers need to read about characters who have feelings for older men.

I enjoyed this book and I’m sure young women will as well.  I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Number of pages- 240

Age Group- 13 to 18

Description of book- paperback, list price $9.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-7234-6

Are you confident with your body or are you, as many of us are, struggling with the way God made you?

Annie F. Downs has written this book using many personal anecdotes and the experiences of friends and family.  She has taken important parts of our bodies, like eyes, ears, and knees and puts them each in their own chapter.  After a thorough discussion each chapter ends with questions, Bible verses to read, and ideas and activities to make the discussion concrete in your mind.

Excerpt from the Book!

About the author- Annie F. Downs currently lives in Tennessee and is a blogger, speaker, teacher, and writer.  She enjoys writing books for young women in high school and college.  She is on Facebook and www.AnnieBlogs.com.

My thoughts- I took a lot of notes while reading this book, because there was a lot of information which I wanted to remember.

I thought Annie F. Downs had a good idea when she described different ways to make a unique me from my head all the way down to my feet.  I never would have given much thought to thinking of what my shoulders and knees can do for God.  I also enjoyed all the personal stories.  They are written so well that young women, 13 to 18, will relate to them and understand how to be happy with what God has given them.

I loved the recipes and extras in the appendix.  The “truth and lie” cards will help all to know the truth.  This is a book I would have liked to read when I was a young woman and I will pass it on to my daughter when she is 13.  Please pick up one today.

Whatever: A 90-day Devotional for Livin’ the True, Noble, and Totally Excellent Life! By Allia Zobel Nolan

Genre- Juvenile Nonfiction/Religious/Christian/Devotional & Prayer

Series- FaithGirlz!

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 304

Age Group- 9 and up

Description of book- paperback, list price $6.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72534-3

Do you use the word, “whatever,” a lot in a negative way?  This devotional and Philippians 4:8-13 will help change the way you think of “whatever.”  These ninety devotionals will help you grow in truth, nobleness, righteousness, purity, loveliness, and what is admirable with God.

You will learn how to deal with avoiding gossip, changing your thoughts, use of alcohol, having a humble heart, and making the best friends.

About the author- Allia Zobel Nolan currently lives with her husband in Connecticut.  She is an author of over 130 children’s books and nine adult books.  She is the recipient of the 2005 Mom’s Choice Award for the Most Outstanding Children’s Book for Preschoolers.  Her website is www.alliawrites.com.

My thoughts- This book is an addition to the FaithGirlz! collection of books.  Philippians 4:8-13 is a great group of verses to use to develop a 90-day devotional for tweens.  Tweens are at an impressionable age and this devotional can help guide them on the right course as they grow.  As an older reader I even took a lot of good nuggets of information to help me with my growth with God.  My tween children enjoyed the devotions I read to them.

There were just a couple of things that I think would help improve the book- get rid of the slang and add an introduction.  I don’t like the use of slang, because the words change throughout the years and it talks down to the reader’s intelligence.  I think an introduction would help tie the book together and could explain each of the sections.

I would recommend this book if you are looking for a good devotional for the tween girl in your life.

Published by- Zondervan

Number of pages- 224

Age Group- 9 and up

Description of book- paperback, list price $7.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72344-8

Fourteen-year-old Nick Caden and his family are on a vacation at the Deadwood Canyon Ghost Town.  This town is more than empty buildings, it is also where actors put on a daily show, and a murder has occurred.  Nick saw the body, but nobody believes him.

Nick is a part of an organization that uses a computer program based on TV programs to solve real-life crimes.  He pursues his suspects with the help of the computer program and a young lady named Annie.

Will they be able to solve the murder or was there no murder?

Excerpt from the Book!

About the author- Eddie Jones lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.  He has written nine book and 100 articles.  His novel, The Curse of Captain LaFoote, won the 2011 Selah Award in young adult fiction.

My thoughts- It is difficult to find good quality books for young men to read and this book was great.  Nick Caden is a typical teen and I think he will appeal to many teens and tweens.

I couldn’t put this book down.  I’m glad I started after everyone had gone to bed.  I wanted to know if there really was a murder or if it was just the theatrics of the Deadwood Canyon Ghost Town.

I thought that the reaction Nick’s Mom had to the Bible was interesting.  She had such a strong opinion about how the Bible causes people not to be able to think for themselves or that it can be proven.  Nick wanted to be able to believe the verses he read, but I don’t know what he thought after his mom gives her opinion.

As this book is part of a series I look forward to learning more about their views on religion and solving more mysteries.  I think you will like this book and series as I have.

My thoughts- This book is perfect for young girls ages, 4-7.  It is cute and the CD case and box hold everything together perfectly.  It is perfect for the three young girls I have in my life.

The “Sweet Thoughts” and “Sweet Words” will teach them important aspects of the Bible which will stay with them all of their lives.  I liked the addition of some of the great women of the Bible, like Deborah, Ruth, Esther, Lydia, and Priscilla.  As there are still books of the bible I have not yet read, this book taught me about women I had not heard of.

My young daughter, has really enjoyed looking at the pictures and listening to the stories read by Roma Downey.  (Don’t tell her, but I’m getting one for her for a present.)

This story Bible is perfect for any young lady.  I highly recommend it.

Former Congressman Mark Stedman has chosen not to continue his presidential campaign and instead returns home to his family.  On his way home he has an accident and meets an Amish farmer, Josiah Stoltzfus.

During his time with the Stoltzfus family Mark decides that a man with strong convictions would be the right person to be in the White House.  Josiah Stoltzfus.

Mark returns home and begins a new campaign for Josiah with more zeal than he had for his own campaign, but would Josiah actually join the campaign.  Would Josiah do it, since the Amish usually stay out of politics?  And if he does will he be shunned by his Ordnung?

Sample from the Book!

About the author-

Martha Bolton is the author of over 80 books of inspiration and humor and has been Emmy-nominated and Dove-nominated.  She was a staff writer for Bob Hope for over 15 years.

My thoughts- This book was a serious, thought-provoking book that I enjoyed reading as a change from the typical Amish romance.

I enjoy reading Amish books that involve the English, because I learn how much more serious the Amish are with family life and their life with God.  Josiah for President is one of the best books for this example, because Josiah sticks with his convictions during the campaign.  Josiah sets a good example for all of us on how we shouldn’t compromise our convictions.  He didn’t let anyone, even Mark change him.

When I learned of this book I knew I had to read it and you should too.  And I won’t give away the end, but…wow.  I didn’t expect what I read and I’m not sure what to say!  So, find a copy so you can tell me what you think.

One Big Thing: Discovering What You Were Born to Do by Phil Cooke

Genre- Business & Economics/Motivation/General

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 184

Age Group- Young Adult/Adult

Description of Book- hardback, list price $22.99, ISBN 978-1-5955-5484-0

Do you know what you were born to do?  What God wants for you?  This book by Phil Cooke will help you by having you answer questions that will lead you to find your big thing.

He will ask you:

  • do you need a brand?
  • what is the map of your future?
  • is it ever too late?

He will also show you how to keep your values and not get lost in the clutter.

Go through the steps described in this book and you will learn what your one big thing is and how to use it in your life.

Author- Phil Cooke is an internationally known filmmaker, media producer, and speaker.  He has written many books and writes daily on his own blog.  He lives in California with his wife, Kathleen.

My Thoughts- I really enjoyed reading this book and I took lots of notes, so I can begin to figure out what my OBT is.  One thing I would have enjoyed would have been an area in the book to write my thoughts or a workbook.

I loved the concepts, quotes, and important phrases in the middle of the pages.  Two important things I learned were, to not get lost in the clutter and never compromise my values.

The story that stuck with me the most was the one about the “bread plate” lady.  She chose to focus on only selling bread plates and nothing else, and it was a success.  She did something I need to to do- focus on one thing and become really good at it.

This book is for everyone, especially high school and college kids who need to know their “one big thing.”  Please read this book!

The Enchanted Attic by L.L. Samson

Genre- Juvenile Fiction/General

Series- The Enchanted Attic (Book 2)

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 192

Age Group- Tweens

Description of book- paperback, list price $7.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72797-2

Inspired by Herman Melville and his 1851 novel, Moby Dick, Linus and Ophelia, 14-year-old twins, and their friend, Walter, meet Captain Ahab in their Enchanted Attic.

He is unlike Quasimodo, unhappy and temperamental.  As they try to change his focus from capturing and killing the great white whale, to gathering any whale oil to take home, they are in for some adventures.  He tries to take a boat, kill a wild cat, and learn how to navigate the internet.

Will the children be able to turn Captain Ahab’s focus away from the whale?

Excerpt from the Book!

About the author- L. L. Samson has been a co-author with her husband and has written over 25 books herself.

My thoughts- I thought this book was just as exciting as Facing the Hunchback of Notre Dame.  Linus, Ophelia and Walter don’t have as much fun with Captain Ahab as they did with Quasimodo, but I think the kids learn how different people react to different situations.

I really liked Captain Ahab.  I was impressed at how well he adapted to and enjoyed today’s technology.  I’m glad he wanted to take some of the technology back, like having a flushing system on the Pequod.

I can see how some readers may not like the addition of another grownup, Aunt Portia, because it starts as kids only and then includes Father Lou.  I have a feeling though that they may both be needed in future stories.

I thought this book was great and I may just go read Moby Dick to see what happens to Captain Ahab.  Please check out this book.  The next book out will be Dueling with the Three Musketeers.

The Gospel of Yes by Mike Glenn

Genre- AdultThe Gospel of Yes

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 228

Age Group- Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $14.99, ISBN 978-0-307-73047-3

Does God liberate you or limit you?  If we say yes more, like God does in the Bible then we know that God liberates us.

Mike Glenn show us the “yes” of God in this book.  We can learn the “yes” of destiny, authentic relationships, simplicity, and creation.

There is so much more to our lives than all the negativity that the world shows us.  And we need to make sure we focus on the yes and not the no.  And the included discussion questions will help us do that.

Excerpt from this book.

About the author- Mike Glenn and his wife have two married sons and he is the senior pastor of Brentwood Baptist church in Tennessee.  His blog is www.truthfulconversations.com.

My thoughts- God and our contemporary society are at such odds.  God is so much about yes and our society is about no.  Until I read this book, I was following our society and always focusing on everything negative.  We need to not focus on our sins and we need to commit always to YES.

Some parts of the book seemed to go on and on, but I think it was because Mike Glenn was making sure that I knew the power of “yes.”  “Yes” is so positive and we need to make sure we follow that instead of getting sucked back into all the “no’s” of this world.

This book is important for us to read, because we need to focus on “Yes.”  Please pick up a copy, so you can focus on the “yes” like I can now.

Disclosure of Material Connection- I received The Gospel of Yes by Mike Glenn for free from the WaterBrook Multnomah “Blogging For Books” program. I was not required to write a positive review. We Need Invisible Cloaks

As I read Colossians 3:12 (Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering. KJV) today I was struck by the fact that we are holy now that we have chosen God and Jesus.

As we are holy we need to make sure we act holy towards others.  And when I looked at the second half of the verse, I decided that I need to be wearing an invisible cloak.  This cloak needs to be made of mercy, kindness, humbleness, meekness, and longsuffering.  That cloak needs to stay wrapped around me from head to toe covering everything but my eyes.  I especially need it over my mouth, so I can make sure that all of those characteristics are coming from my mouth, not anger, malice, etc.  I need my eyes uncovered, because I need to be able to see how my actions are treating others and what can be done differently.  I am going to pray daily that my cloak is on.

How many of you have your cloaks on today?

The Reason by William Sirls

Genre- Fiction/Christian/GeneralThe Reason by William Sirls

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 408

Age Group- Adult

Description of Book- paperback, list price $12.99, ISBN 978-1-4016-8736-6

A debut novel, this book begins with a storm over St. Thomas Church and then it continues with the storms of life in the local town.

The church’s large wooden cross is destroyed by a bolt of lightning and the members begin to lose their faith.  Some of the people like Macey Lewis and Brooke are told, “only believe.”  And that is very difficult for both of them as they work to save the life of Alex, Brooke’s son.  He has leukemia.

Macey, Zach, and other in the town are compelled by the phrase.

What will happen to their faith?

Author- William Sirls is the father of two and currently lives in Michigan.

My Thoughts- I’m not sure what to think about this book.  I thought this book was creepy, in both a good way and a bad way.  It seemed to vary from one part of the book to another.  It’s a feeling I can’t really explain.

I wasn’t really sure about the character of Kenneth.  I didn’t think it was right to have a character that represented Jesus here on earth.  Kenneth was a carpenter and he performed miracles around town.  Jesus won’t becoming back as a person, so I think he never should have been represented as a person.

I didn’t like Alex having leukemia.  I would enjoy reading a book other than a romance that had healthy people.  I get tired of reading about sick or dying people.

I didn’t like this book, because of the representation of Jesus and Alex’s illness.  Read this book and tell me what you think.

Haflings by Heather Burch

Genre- Teen Fiction/Christian/Fantasy
Series- Haflings (Book 1)
Published by- Zondervan
Copyrighted- 2012
Number of pages- 288
Age Group- 15 and up
Description of book- hardcover, list price $14.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72818-4
Haflings.  Hell hounds.  Evil Scientists.  Suspicious godfather.  Nikki Youngblood gets all of those things at one time.
The Haflings (Raven, Mace, and Vine) are sent to protect Nikki from the evils that lie ahead.  Mace and Raven both like her, but a relationship with her is forbidden.  Nikki does her best to not have a relationship with either of them, but that proves difficult as she is often in danger.
What will she do?
About the author-  Heather Burch currently lives in Florida with her husband and sons.  She loves fiction and has learned that writing is her hearts desire.
My thoughts- I’m not sure what I think about the Haflings, but I do like Nikki Youngblood.  It is refreshing to find a female character who doesn’t fall for every guy who pays attention to her.  Nikki is also resourceful and knows what she wants, so she goes and gets it.
It was Mace and Raven, the Hafling teen boys, that were more focused on romance that they should have been.  I don’t think that teen boys should be portrayed as love sick boys.  It doesn’t show us how young men should act towards young women.  It doesn’t set a good example for young women as well, because young women need strong young men.
I enjoyed all the action from the hell hounds attacking to a godfather that Nikki doesn’t trust.  I liked this book and I hope you do too.

Description of book- hardback, list price $19.99, ISBN 978-0-307-72973-6

Written for both lay members and church leaders this books looks at the different qualities that a healthy church contains.  Each chapter contains “Keys to a Blessed Church” which tie the chapters together and help readers to learn what goes into a healthy church.

Some sections in this book are:

  • “The Gateway Story”
  • “Blessed Vision”
  • “Blessed Shepherds”
  • “Blessed Leaders”
  • “Blessed Government”
  • “Blessed Church Culture”

About the author- Robert Morris has been married to Debbie for more than 30 years and have three children and grandchildren.  He has written a number of different books and is the founding senior pastor of Gateway Church.

My thoughts- I thought this book was spectacular.

Robert Morris has a blessed church, which is evident from the growth of his church and the structure which has been set up to protect it.  As a lay person it is important, because I can learn how my church is doing.  The information in this book is even more important for pastors and elders, and those who are involved in the daily running of the church.

I never knew that a pastor didn’t have to do everything for everyone and that one of the most important parts was in preparing the sermon for the week.  I also thought the information about Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, telling Moses how to delegate his responsibilities in Exodus 18 was interesting.

I think this book is a must for everyone from the lay member to the pastor to learn how an effective church operates.  Please pick up a copy today.

Jackson: The Iron-Willed Commander by Paul Vickery

Genre- History/Military/General

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Series- The Generals

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 235

Age Group- Adult and younger

Description of Book- hardback, list price $19.99, ISBN 978-1-5955-5454-3

Andrew Jackson was a husband, bureaucrat, and general in the early 1800’s.

Paul Vickery uses quotes from various people in Andrew Jackson’s life which gives a better picture of his life.  This book focuses on Jackson’s life as a military leader from the War of 1812 to the uprisings against the Creeks, Choctaws, Cherokees, Chickasaws, and Seminoles.  As a general he always stood by his troops and did what they did.  He was a man who never changed his mind and could be quite unforgiving.

He was “Old Hickory.”

Author- Paul Vickery is an ordained minister, Professor of History at Oral Roberts University, and presents historical characters in a Chautauqua format.  He and his wife enjoy travel

My Thoughts- I liked this book better than some of the other books I have read in the series, because of the attention to using quotes from Andrew Jackson and the people he knew during his lifetime.  It was especially nice that Paul Vickery mentioned it in the prologue.  That was when I knew that I was going to enjoy the rest of the book and I did.

I must say that I really learned a lot about early American history from this book.  I didn’t remember reading about Jackson’s involvement with the removal American Indians in my history textbooks in school.  It mentioned that many still don’t like him and I don’t blame them.

I was really excited when I was looking in the back of the book and I saw a list of the other books in the series.

I really enjoyed this book.  Go pick up a copy today!

Aldo’s Fantastical Movie Palace by Jonathan Friesen

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 304

Age Group- 11 and up

Description of book- hardcover, list price $15.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72110-9

Chloe takes refuge in her family’s theatre, because no one can see the scars on her face and her father is not there to ignore her as he does at home.  Her father had accidentally caused them when one of his inventions failed.

She meets Nick, who is blind.  They form a friendship over a movie script Nick has been working on.  When they are together in the theatre, they are suddenly transported to the script where they have adventures with dragons, elves, and a strange vapor that wants to destroy everything.

About the author- Jonathan Friesen lives in Minnesota with his wife and three children.  He is an author, speaker and youth writing coach.

My thoughts- I thought this book was quite good.  I always enjoy fantastical stories and this fits the bill with elves, dragons and sinister characters.

I’m not sure the younger readers would see the connection between Vaepor and Satan, but it was something that I noticed when I learned about everybody going into the pool.  Vaepor was taking away all of their memories and giving them a new life, and that is what Satan can do if we let him.

I am not sure what to make of Nick.  He doesn’t play a major part in the story and his character is dark.  And for me, his death wasn’t devastating, because I didn’t know much about him.

I would recommend this book to children who enjoy fantasies.

Liberator by Bryan Davis

Genre- Juvenile Fiction/Religious/Christian/Fantasy

Liberator by Bryan Davis

Series- Dragons of Starlight

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 432

Age Group- Young Adult (13-17)

Description of book- softcover, list price $9.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-71839-0

In the last book of the series the human army is coming to save the slaves.  Jason, Koren and Elyssa are working to save the slaves and army from a deadly disease.  The new dragon king Taushin is trying to pit the dragons against each other.  He is also trying to get one of the Starlighters, Koren or Cassabrie, under his control.  Koren and Cassabrie have their own plans on how to save everyone.  Will the disease kill all the humans?  Will the dragons kill all the humans?  Or will the dragons and humans form alliances and find a remedy to the deadly disease?

About the author- Bryan Davis lives in western Tennessee where he lives with his wife and seven children. He has written the series, Dragons in Our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Echoes from the Edge.

My thoughts- This book needs an introduction that discusses what has happened in the other three books.  I didn’t remember what had happened in the last book, so I had to struggle to remember as I was reading the first couple of chapters.  Another thing that would have been helpful would have been a list of the characters and their roles.  I kept getting confused between human and dragon and bad and good.

This was the best book in the series because the action happens and the reader learns more about the Creator and how the Starlighters are crucial to saving the human slaves.  The dragons are interesting in their alliances between themselves and with the humans (some their former slaves).  I was interested in the relationship between Jason and Elyssa.  I didn’t know they even had a relationship.  I always thought the relationship would be between Jason and Koren.

I would recommend this book to all teens and especially those who have already read the other books in the series.  They really need the closure that takes place in the last book.

Disclosure of Material Connection- I received Liberator by Bryan Davis for free from Zondervan. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. The Orphan King by Sigmund Brouwer

Genre- Fiction/Young Adult

Series- Merlin’s Immortals (Book 1)

Published by- WaterBrook Multnomah

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 220

Age Group- Young Adult

Description of book- paperback, list price $9.99, ISBN 978-1-4000-7154-8

It was started in Magnus and Wings of Dawn and now the story of Thomas is being explored in greater detail.

Thomas was raised in a monastery and now must leave to save a knight from being hung and to gain two more traveling companions and go to Magnus.  He carries himself well even though he is in unfamiliar territory.

Will his companions help him obtain his goals or will they stop his progress along the way?

About the author- Sigmund Brouwer has over three million books in print and has done a Rock and Roll Literacy presentation all over North America for the past 20 years.  He lives with his wife and two daughters in Canada and Tennessee.

My thoughts- Sometimes I have to search high and low for books that are suitable for teen boys.  This book I would recommend, because there are no vampires, werewolves,  and little romance.

One thing I didn’t like about The Orphan King is that the synopsis on the back doesn’t have much to do with what happens in this book.  It seems that it discusses what the series is about and not much more.

I did like how the characters were developed and the details in the scenery.  I was surprised at how much mental strength Thomas had.  He was an orphan and raised in an monastery, to things that I thought would really decrease his chances of success.  It would seem that others could learn from Thomas- that persevering through the rough spots will make you strong.

I am looking forward to the other books in this series and I recommend this book to teen boys.

Grant- The Generals Series by Mitchell Yockelson

Genre- History/Military/General

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 194

Age Group- Adult and younger

Description of Book- hardback, list price $19.99, ISBN 978-1-5955-5452-9

Ulysses Grant has been called many things and one of them is a great general of the Union Army.  He probably never thought he would be general in chief when he was younger, because he reluctantly went to West Point and resigned from the army at 32.

Grant decided during the beginning of the Civil War to help the troops in Illinois and he was reinstated into the army and used his knowledge to help win the war for the Union.

He is portrayed as a defender of the U.S. with common sense and determination.

Author- Mitchell Yockelson is an instructor of history at the United State Navel Academy and Norwich University and an Investigative Archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration.  He has a doctorate from the Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University.  He has written another book MacArthur: America’s General, which is part of the General’s Series.

My Thoughts- The books in this series have been interesting and simple enough that they could be read as “living books” in a history class and so does this one.  This book would work for most grades either reading aloud or silent reading.  I have begun to read this book to my first and third grade children and they want me to read more.

I enjoyed learning information I didn’t know about my distant cousin, like how he really didn’t have a drinking problem and how his name changed to Ulysses S. Grant.  I know this series is about generals, but I would have enjoyed learning more about his presidency.

I highly recommend this book as recreational reading or to be read in school.  I just wish there was a list of other books in the series listed in this one.

Disclosure of Material Connection- I received Grant: Savior of the Union by Mitchell Yockelson for free from the publisher through the BookSneeze Review Bloggers Program. Facing the Hunchback of Notre Dame by L. L. Samson

Series- The Enchanted Attic

Published by- Zondervan

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 141

Age Group- Tweens

Description of book- softcover, list price $7.99, ISBN: 978-0-310-72795-8

A secret attic is discovered by twins, Ophelia and Linus.  As an avid bookworm, twelve-year-old Ophelia falls asleep reading The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the attic when she wakes up and discovers Quasimodo.  The twins have the help of friends to keep Quasimodo safe and to help him get back to the time and place where he belongs before he is destroyed.

Will they make it in time?

About the author- L. L. Samson has been a co-author with her husband and has written over 25 books herself.

My thoughts- I was captivated by this book from the beginning.  I thought it was clever to have two different titles to most of the chapters and I was reminded of the Narnia series by C. S. Lewis with the word usage.

I have been trying to think of something that I didn’t like about this book and I can’t think of anything.  The plot and characters were well developed and I couldn’t stop reading it once I started.

Other than the excellent storyline, I thought it was great that this book was written for both boys and girls.  It is difficult to find good books for boys and it is great when the book works well for boys or girls.

I would highly recommend this book to all juveniles.  This book made me want to check The Hunchback of Notre Dame out of the library so I could learn even more about Quasimodo.  I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Surfing for God by Michael John Cusick

Genre- Religion/Christian Life/General

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 205

Age Group- Adult

Description of Book- paperback, list price $15.99, ISBN 978-0-8499-4723-0

Is the temptation of pornography really a search for something more?  This world has 68 million searches for pornography each day and at least 70% of Christian men say they have viewed it in the last year.

Michael John Cusick uses his examples from his life and his experience as a counselor and ministry leader that it takes more than willpower and more faith to stop, it takes a search for what your heart really desires.  In this book he tells how the struggles begin, how to prevent them, and how to overcome the problem when it starts.

Author- Michael John Cusick is a licensed professional counselor, ordained minister, and spiritual director wh0 has experienced the restoring hand of God.  He also founded Restoring the Soul, a ministry which provides life changing soul care to Christian leaders.

My Thoughts- This book is a must read for any man who may be struggling with sexual problems or may know someone who is.  As a wife, I don’t think I would give it to my husband if there was not a solid relationship.

There are many parts in this book that could help many with more than just sexual struggles.  I think that is great, because some men may have more issues than just the sexual struggle.

One of the best parts of this book was learning about the 3 Spiritual Counterfeits.   They are the “counterfeit good,” “counterfeit truth,” and “counterfeit worship.”  These are the works of the enemy and he uses those to lure us to him.  It is his lies and temptations that keep men away from the true God and His promises.

I would highly recommend this book to any man who struggles sexually.

Coming Apart by Charles Murray

Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010Genre- Social Science- Sociology

Published by- Crown Forum

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 408

Age Group- Adult

Description of book- hardback, list price $27.00, ISBN 978—0-307-45342-6

Using statistics from the past 50 years, Charles Murray sets out to explore what is happening between the upper and lower classes in America.  He uses white America as the example, but it works for all of America.  The new classes have totally changed from the core behaviors and values of the past and this change has nothing do with income inequality and continues regardless of the economy.  The American project is at risk of failing.

About the author- Charles Murray has a Ph.D in political science and is currently the W. H. Brady Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.  He lives with his wife in Maryland.

My thoughts- This book was interesting, but I think that 300 pages for the main text was too long.  It could have been shorter and gotten to the point faster.

I have never thought that the census was that important and asked a lot of personal questions that it didn’t need to.  This book showed me how important the census is and what kind of information can be gotten from it.  Without this information there would be no book.

I thought the last chapter was the best, because it was no longer about numbers and it talked about Charles Murray’s opinion and where the United States will be in the future.  We can already see in Europe what happens when heritage is forgotten.  As a country we need to get back to our founding fathers’ virtues, so that we can have a strong future without such a strong separation between classes.

I recommend this book to those who want to learn how America is coming apart culturally.

1000 Days: The Ministry of Christ by Jonathan Falwell

Genre- Religion/Christian Life/General

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 229

Age Group- Adult

Description of Book- hardback, list price $22.99, ISBN 978-0-8499-4808-4

Do you ever feel like you are in chaos or unhappiness and you think you will never feel truly happy?  Then reading and studying this book will give you a point of view of Jesus that you may never have thought of before.  Jesus spent 1,000 days or 3 years on this earth, teaching truths that are as relevant today as they were then.

Jonathan Falwell gives the reader the concept of “the happiness of less.”  It is one of the key ways to gain true happiness.  Come and meet Jesus, a man who did everything with purpose.

Author- Jonathan Falwell is married, has four children, and lives in Virginia.  He is the senior pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, writes a weekly column, and has his photographs appearing in magazines.

My Thoughts- This book was great.  I actually fell in love with the book in the first couple of chapters and it made me want to keep reading and never put the book down.

One of my favorite parts of this book was on pages 153-55, when it talked about how Jesus prayed for his disciples and he did it for us as well.  It was overwhelming and awe inspiring to think that Jesus prayed for me even though I hadn’t been born.  He prayed that I would have protection, unity, would have joy, and not be lost.  It is something I need to remember every day so I can be closer to Jesus and God.

I would highly recommend this book.  It would work well as an individual study or a group study.  Each person should own this book and so should church libraries.

Hulda Klager only had an eighth grade education, but she created an easy-pealing apple and more than 200 varieties of lilacs.

It started as a hobby with the apples and turned into a passion to develop a twelve petal lilac.  Sometimes her family felt at odds with her, but they fully supported her as she worked with the plants.

There were family tragedies and seasonal floods, but Hulda and her family persevered in Woodland, Washington.  And triumphed over all the odds.

Chapter One

About the author- Jane Kirkpatrick lives with her husband in Oregon and has two lilacs from Hulda Klager’s garden.  This book was her twenty-second book.  More about Jane Kirkpatrick here

Jane Kirkpatrick’s Website.

My thoughts- I loved this book.  My grandmother’s yard has lilacs and it’s so fun to go there and smell the flowers.  After reading about Hulda Klager and how she chose and cultivated her lilacs, I have a new respect for all the lilacs I see.  I am looking forward to going into my grandmother’s yard this year too see the colors and count the number of petals.

One of the most interesting things I learned about Hulda Klager, besides her ability to cultivate over 200 variety of lilacs was learning about how she went to Seventh Day Adventist Bible Studies and church services at a Presbyterian church.

I highly recommend this book.  It is for anyone, but especially for those who have an interest in lilacs and gardening or the kindness and passion of one woman.  Please pick up a copy today!

Trevin serves King Laetham of Camrithia.  And he loves the princess, Melaia, but she is being wooed by the Dregmoorian prince.

King Laetham sends Trevin on a quest to find the missing comains (captains in the king’s army), which he gives his all.  Along with this mission he has another one, find special harps for Melaia.  She needs those harps to restore the stairway to heaven.

Trevin will face many dangers: threats, winds, and fire caves.  Trevin continues his quest, even when he is accused of murder.  Will Trevin be able to accomplish everything he needs to?

Chapter One

About the author- Karyn Henley has won a regional Emmy Award for a Christmas television special.  She wrote Beginner’s Bible, which has sold more than five million copies.  Breath of Angel is the first book in this series.  She lives in Tennessee.

Karyn Henley’s Website.

My thoughts- I have not read the first book in this series and there is enough information in this book, to not need to read the first book if it is not available.  This book was so good I couldn’t put it down.  I stayed up late reading it.  And I am looking forward to the next one.

I thought the characters and the plot lines were well developed.  As I was reading I could close my eyes and see and feel what Trevin and Princess Melaia were experiencing.

The addition of the Angelaeon was splendid.  It reminded me of the series Chuck Black has written, but the series are completely different.  This series has something I had never thought of before, the Nephili (half-angel, half-human) and Windwings (winged horses).

I would recommend this book if you like fantasy and being captivated ‘til the end.

He has been on American Idol, he’s blind, and he has a strong faith in God.

Scott MacIntyre’s life has never been ordinary, since birth he has been blind and by the age of six he had a paying gig with the piano.  When he graduated from college at the age of nineteen and was soon to be on his way to college in England, he was diagnosed with kidney failure.  It was with his faith in God and his family and friends that he was able to conquer the odds and call his trials and a blessing and not a curse.

Author- Scott MacIntyre has toured across the world giving concerts and was the first blind finalist on American Idol.  He is an inspirational speaker and his latest CD debuted at #18 in the iTunes Pop Album Chart.

My Thoughts- Scott MacIntyre has had a lot of triumphs and a lot of struggles.  I am very impressed that he continually maintained his faith throughout it all.  This book should be required reading for all those in high school, so they can discover that God’s blessings are there in their darkest days.

Many people think that breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend is the end of the world, but Scott has had many more serious issues and has triumphed.  He has been legally blind since he was born, but he never let that stop him from reaching his dreams.  He learned to play the piano and sing, went to college in England, and participated in American Idol.

Along with being blind, he also had kidney failure when he was graduating from college.  He had wonderful doctors, family and friends.  He was able to get a new kidney.  I was surprised to read that his little sister developed the same problem later on and I was glad that she has had the same success.

It is for Scott’s faith in God during his trials that I highly recommend this book.

Annabel wants to have a life in a nunnery to escape the advances of the bailiff.  Unfortunately, her family is now in great debt and she has become an indentured servant to Lord Ranulf, which puts her even closer to the bailiff.

Lord Ranulf is not the man she expects him to be and he begins to give her security and joy.  Her problems with the bailiff and her insecurity puts him in danger and everything rests with her.  Annabel will need to decide between her plans and the plans God has for her.

My thoughts- I loved this book.  As I read it, it gave me chills and goose bumps.  When I come across something excellent I feel like that, so I knew this book was great.

Annabel was a strong Christian woman, but she had weaknesses as many of us do and that was not telling Lord Ranulf everything when it came to Bailiff Tom, because she wasn’t willing to trust enough.  I hope I can always remember to trust those who are to be trusted.

I highly recommend this book.

Tyndale by David Teems

Genre- Biography & Autobiography/Religious/Generalimage

Published by- Thomas Nelson

Copyrighted- 2012

Number of pages- 303

Age Group- Adult

Description of Book- paperback, list price $15.99, ISBN 978-1-5955-5221-1

It is the age of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Martin Luther, Thomas More, and a man by the name of William Tyndale.

The Catholic Church controls almost everything for the English and there are people who wish to change the way people get the word of God.  William Tyndale is one of the people who plans to help change the world.  He lives and works in secret, because he has been exiled from England.

What will happen to Tyndale and the English Reformation?

Author- David Teems and his wife live in Tennessee near their grown sons.  He has written four other books, one of them, Majestie: The King Behind the King James Bible.

My Thoughts- I thought this book was very interesting.  Some of it was long and boring, but I can understand if there is not a lot of information about his daily life.  Sometimes I thought there was a little too much information about Thomas More.  I know he was an important character in Tyndale’s history, but there was too much information about him.

William Tyndale was an awesome man.  He wrote a Bible with words that everybody would understand and gave his permission for all future translations.  Tyndale is a person we Christians can look up to.  Today’s writers can take note as well, because Tyndale wrote for his ideal reader, who was the plowboy.  That is something to remember when writing.

Tyndale also made a lot of new words which can be learned in the appendix.  And many of them we use today.

I highly recommend.

Many men are unsure how to have “a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10) with Jesus.  This book will help you become the man you need and want to be.

Dive into this book where you will learn your seven primal needs and how to relate them to the Bible.  You will learn:

  • How you know God really knows and cares about you.
  • Your life has purpose.
  • How to break the cycle.

About the author- Patrick Morley has been advocating for men for many years and has founded Man in the Mirror to help men all over the world.  He lives in Florida with his wife.  They have four grandchildren and two married children.  He is on Facebook and more information can be found at www.maninthemirror.com.

My thoughts- While I am not a man, I have listened to what my husband has said about his relationship with God and I know this is the book for him and any man that has the desire to improve his spiritual life.

I thought it was great how each chapter was about one of the seven primal needs that man needs to resolve to have a good spiritual life with God.  The questions at the end of the chapters help the reader think more deeply about what he has learned.

I highly recommend this book to all men.
