Many countries on this earth are having economic difficulties, and the United States is no exception.  Godonomics, by Chad Hovind, tells us how to use the economic principles God shows us in the Bible.

Currently the United States in developing a socialist economic system, which puts the government and what they can do before the individual.  The country was designed to have free-market capitalism.  Biblical principles are supported when there is free-market capitalism.

This book shows in nine parts how to begin to have a better economic system in your house and how it is not a conservative or liberal issue.

About the author- Chad Hovind currently is the lead pastor of Horizon Community Church.  He is the creator of the Godonomics DVD curriculum series and he Fast Track Bible DVD.

My thoughts- There is no doubt in my mind that the United States is in an economic crisis.  There are many people out of work, in debt, or who have given up.  We can’t forget about the debt of the country too, trillions of dollars.  We need to get back to the system that our Founding Fathers set-up or even better the true way that God shows us in the Bible.

Godonomics, by Chad Hovind, shows us that way.  I think this book is a must have for everyone.  It is not about what you believe in either religion or politics, it is simply about an economic system that works and was proven to work when the county began.  That was long before all the programs were developed the less fortunate.

I did not take any economics classes when I was in school, but I think that any econ. teacher needs to read this book.  They also need to teach it to their students if possible.  I think everyone else needs to read this book too!

All of us can be greater through Jesus and Steven Furtick shows us how to do it in his book, Greater.  He uses the story of Elisha as an example on how we can live a better life through Christ.  There is more to our life than what we know and this book shows us how to do it.

About the author- Steven Furtick currently lives in North Carolina with his wife and three children.  He is the founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church.  He has written the book, Sun Standing Still.

My thoughts- One of the ways you can know a book is good is by the quality and number of quotes from others at the front or back of the book- Greater, by Steven Furtick had a lot of them.  I decided that with the number of quotes and the fact that it was a New York Times Bestseller, that I would have a great book to read.  I was right.  Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop.

I enjoyed the personal stories, and I could tell how gifted Furtick is.  One of my favorite parts involved his son, Elijah, and learning how to ride a two-wheeled bicycle.  Furtick was having a difficult time teaching Elijah, but when Elijah wanted to write a sermon for his brother’s birthday, Furtick was able to help him.  Furtick decided it was o.k. that he couldn’t teach Elijah to ride a bike.  This example show me that we don’t have to be great at everything.  We can simply excel at what we can do.  We can focus on ourselves, not what someone else can do.  We can think inside the box.

I would rather have had the questions at the end of each chapter, but I really liked the chapter titles, like “Burn the Plows.” 

I recommend this book to high school students and adults.

Humble Orthodoxy, by Joshua Harris, may only contain 4 chapters and a study guide, but it is filled with information that all Christians need to read.  Harris takes a look at New Testament verses that help lead Christians to a love-filled life that is humble.  We should not become like the Pharisees.

If you want to know the best way to be the best Christian and still be humble about it, then this is the book for you.

About the author- Joshua Harris currently lives with his wife and three children in Maryland.  He is the lead pastor at Covenant Life Church.

My thoughts- Humble Orthodoxy, by Joshua Harris, was an important book for me to read and it is important for you to read.  According to Harris, orthodoxy, “refers to right thinking about God,” (pg. 1) and as the title states we need to be humble about it.

I know that it can be difficult to be humble sometimes, but that is one of the most important things we need in our world and churches.  I believe that if people read this book and put the ideas into practice that fewer people would leave their church.

I did have a difficult time reading the first chapter, but the rest of the book flowed smoothly.  I did wish that the study guide was at the end of each chapter.  It works better for me.

Everyone should read, Humble Orthodoxy and apply it to their lives, don’t let the price stop you.

My thoughts- Firsthand, by Ryan and Josh Shook, is a perfect book for people in their twenties who  want to have their own faith instead of their parents’.

I thought this book had a lot of good information I could implement in my own life and was easy to read, but it lacked passion.  It had thoughts from the brothers, great information, thoughts from others, and a great section and the end of each chapter, but it just wasn’t as captivating and passionate as I thought this important subject matter should be.

At the end of each chapter, I enjoyed reading about other people’s experiences, answering the questions, and deciding which of the “Might Try This” activities I would do.  All of the “Might Try This” ideas were helping in exploring my relationship with God.

I would recommend this book to all who want to discover a personal relationship with God.

My thoughts-  There are many books about Christian romantic relationships in publication.  I think Get Lost, by Dannah Gresh, is one of the best that I have read.

Top four things I learned or enjoyed:

• We should crave God not men.
• We need agape love for Jesus, not phileo (brotherly) love.
• “Love Feast” study, which takes ten days or ten weeks, is full of spiritual information.
• Complete group leader’s guide and questions.

This is a book that every young lady needs to read before committing herself to a young man.  I wish I had read a book like this when I was younger.  If I had, I would have had a deeper relationship with God when I met my husband and then God would have been first in our relationship.

I highly recommend this book to all young women.  It needs to be at church libraries, public libraries, and bookshelves at home.

My thoughts-  This book is needed in today’s society as so many people are leaving the church, because of the Christians within.

We need to let the sinners in.  We need to make them feel welcome.  I’m glad that I go to a church where I am welcomed for who I am.  I would like to go to different churches that are not “sinner-sensitive churches,” so I could help them from the inside out.  I want all of God’s children to feel welcome, not just the “perfect” ones.

“Fear-based Christianity” and speaking to unbelievers using the Christian language is not the way to go.  People who try to gain followers that way really make me shudder.  They really need to read this book.

All Christians and nonbelievers need to read this book, because we would understand what needs to be done and how to do it.  Please find a copy.

About the author- David Platt currently lives in Birmingham with his wife and their children.  He is the pastor of the Church at Brook Hills.  He is the author of Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream and Radical Together: Unleashing the People of God for the Purpose of God.

My thoughts- I have read some of David Platt’s work and I was excited to be able to read this book.  I was disappointed though, because $9.99 is an awful lot of money to pay for a snippet of Radical and Radical Together.  On the other hand, there is just enough written that I wanted to read more.  I wanted to read the whole books.

I learned a lot about how David Platt thinks about how we should minister as Jesus did and how our churches should be for the people and not the weekly performances or worship bands.

I just wish that these two books in one, had been the two whole books (including a workbook).

This book really wasn’t for me as it left me wanting the complete versions and the price is so high.  It might be the right book for you.

My thoughts- God and our contemporary society are at such odds.  God is so much about yes and our society is about no.  Until I read this book, I was following our society and always focusing on everything negative.  We need to not focus on our sins and we need to commit always to YES.

Some parts of the book seemed to go on and on, but I think it was because Mike Glenn was making sure that I knew the power of “yes.”  “Yes” is so positive and we need to make sure we follow that instead of getting sucked back into all the “no’s” of this world.

This book is important for us to read, because we need to focus on “Yes.”  Please pick up a copy, so you can focus on the “yes” like I can now.

My thoughts- I thought this book was spectacular. 

Robert Morris has a blessed church, which is evident from the growth of his church and the structure which has been set up to protect it.  As a lay person it is important, because I can learn how my church is doing.  The information in this book is even more important for pastors and elders, and those who are involved in the daily running of the church.

I never knew that a pastor didn’t have to do everything for everyone and that one of the most important parts was in preparing the sermon for the week.  I also thought the information about Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, telling Moses how to delegate his responsibilities in Exodus 18 was interesting.

I think this book is a must for everyone from the lay member to the pastor to learn how an effective church operates.  Please pick up a copy today.

Thomas was raised in a monastery and now must leave to save a knight from being hung and to gain two more traveling companions and go to Magnus.  He carries himself well even though he is in unfamiliar territory.

Will his companions help him obtain his goals or will they stop his progress along the way?

About the author- Sigmund Brouwer has over three million books in print and has done a Rock and Roll Literacy presentation all over North America for the past 20 years.  He lives with his wife and two daughters in Canada and Tennessee.

My thoughts- Sometimes I have to search high and low for books that are suitable for teen boys.  This book I would recommend, because there are no vampires, werewolves,  and little romance.

One thing I didn’t like about The Orphan King is that the synopsis on the back doesn’t have much to do with what happens in this book.  It seems that it discusses what the series is about and not much more.

I did like how the characters were developed and the details in the scenery.  I was surprised at how much mental strength Thomas had.  He was an orphan and raised in an monastery, to things that I thought would really decrease his chances of success.  It would seem that others could learn from Thomas- that persevering through the rough spots will make you strong.

I am looking forward to the other books in this series and I recommend this book to teen boys.

My thoughts- I loved this book.  My grandmother’s yard has lilacs and it’s so fun to go there and smell the flowers.  After reading about Hulda Klager and how she chose and cultivated her lilacs, I have a new respect for all the lilacs I see.  I am looking forward to going into my grandmother’s yard this year too see the colors and count the number of petals.

One of the most interesting things I learned about Hulda Klager, besides her ability to cultivate over 200 variety of lilacs was learning about how she went to Seventh Day Adventist Bible Studies and church services at a Presbyterian church.

I highly recommend this book.  It is for anyone, but especially for those who have an interest in lilacs and gardening or the kindness and passion of one woman.  Please pick up a copy today!

About the author- Karyn Henley has won a regional Emmy Award for a Christmas television special.  She wrote Beginner’s Bible, which has sold more than five million copies.  Breath of Angel is the first book in this series.  She lives in Tennessee.

My thoughts- I have not read the first book in this series and there is enough information in this book, to not need to read the first book if it is not available.  This book was so good I couldn’t put it down.  I stayed up late reading it.  And I am looking forward to the next one.

I thought the characters and the plot lines were well developed.  As I was reading I could close my eyes and see and feel what Trevin and Princess Melaia were experiencing.

The addition of the Angelaeon was splendid.  It reminded me of the series Chuck Black has written, but the series are completely different.  This series has something I had never thought of before, the Nephili (half-angel, half-human) and Windwings (winged horses).

I would recommend this book if you like fantasy and being captivated ‘til the end.

My thoughts- While I am not a man, I have listened to what my husband has said about his relationship with God and I know this is the book for him and any man that has the desire to improve his spiritual life.

I thought it was great how each chapter was about one of the seven primal needs that man needs to resolve to have a good spiritual life with God.  The questions at the end of the chapters help the reader think more deeply about what he has learned.

I highly recommend this book to all men.

My thoughts- I like reading suspense and Christian based books.  This book didn’t live up to either of those for me.  There was suspense here and there, but there wasn’t as much as I thought there was going to be based on the cover of the book.  Most of the high suspense didn’t happen until the last quarter of the book.

I know Dr. Chambers used to believe more in God, so I thought there would be more from the other characters to lead him back to God.  I was glad to see that by the end of the book that he does come back to God and become a better man.

I had a hard time putting this book down, so I recommend The Scroll.

About the author-  Joshua Harris has written books on dating, marriage and other topics.  He is a senior pastor in Maryland at Covenant Life where he lives with his wife and children.

My thoughts- I have read several of Joshua Harris’s books before and enjoyed them, so I was eager to read this one as well.

This is such a short book that it doesn’t take very long to read.  I enjoyed reading Chapter Five, “Choosing Your Church.”  We shouldn’t be going from church to church each week and this chapter lists and explains ten questions we can ask to help us choose the best church for us.

The problem I had was in Chapter Six, “Rescuing Sunday.”  Right away in this chapter Joshua Harris mentions that he thinks Christians need not keep the Old Testament Laws about the Sabbath.  I thought we were supposed to keep all ten commandments.  Does this mean that we shouldn’t follow the other nine commandments?  I sincerely hope not.  Our world would not be the same.

I would recommend this book as a guide for picking a church, but beyond that I would keep what you know about the Bible and believe in mind as you read this book.

My thoughts- Once I got passed the first five chapters on politics (not something I’m into), this book was very interesting.

Chapter ten was the best chapter.  Being called, “Are We Raising a Nation of Wimps?” this chapter was all about how parents are over protecting their children.  As a parent, I can see how easy it would be to constantly protect children, but I know that I need to trust my children to God and let their lives progress with me looking on.

The chapter on dishonesty was eye opening.  It has become so easy for us as a society to lie outright or stretch the truth.  It reminds me of the father in the Swiss Family Robinson who talked about telling the truth even when joking.  I am making sure we use that philosophy in our lives.

All in all I would recommend this book.  It has a little bit of everything for everyone from politics to education to technologies.

About the author- Alisa Harris lives in New York City where she is a journalist.  She graduated from college in 2007 and has worked as a college instructor.  World, Albuquerque Journal, the Detroit Free Press, and the Farmington Daily Times have published her works.

My thoughts-

I had a hard time getting into this book.  I thought it would have more info on how she actually separated her faith from her political views, but it seemed to just have stories of her life that must have led to her decision, but she wasn’t clear..

I do commend Alisa on how firm she has always been in her Christian faith and how she has worked her political views into it.  It shows how strongly she respects her parents and God.

The part of the book that I liked the best was the “Epilogue,’ where she talks about what she will pass on to her children that her parents taught her; to care, love (with action) and take heart.

I personally didn’t like this book, but I think there are many people who might.  Readers will be able to understand the thought process of how of the newest Christian voters will choose to vote.

My thoughts- Would I recommend? Yes. I recommend this book to people in the age group listed and also to adults, as the reader can see the consequences of what extreme pride can do to you.  I am sad to know the series is ending.
I love reading these books and my favorite part in the book is the “author commentary.”  After reading the book the commentary pulls everything together and I can then meditate upon the message and how I can apply it in my own life.
Sir Rowan sets a perfect example of how extreme pride can cause your life to change in an instant.  His life as a tournament knight was very self-centered.  He thought he deserved it, because he had been a street urchin.  He thought his heart was still with the Prince, but he had been deceived.  We need to be mindful as Christians that we are not living our lives in pride, because life can change for the worse when you least expect it.
I plan on acquiring the books in this series and the Kingdom Series, because I plan on using them as a teaching tool for my children.

My thoughts-

When I was single I wish I had been able to read a book like this.  If I had had a book like this then I would have known the love of God and how much more important that is than any love from a person.  And how God’s love will help me to love myself and my boyfriend/spouse.

This should be required reading for all girls when they are in high school, whether it be in school or church classes.  They will learn why they should not have “friends with benefits” or why pornography shouldn’t be watched.

The chapter I thought was the best was, “The Line,” and it talked about where you should draw the line with kissing, fondling, and oral sex.  As women we need to know exactly where we will draw the line and to go no further.

I would highly recommend this book to teens and young adults.

My thoughts-

I thought this was an awesome book.  I really enjoyed reading the modern story, the biblical story, and the short study section at the end of each chapter. 

My favorite part of each chapter was the study section.  I know there is a little bit of a “bad” girl in me, so I knew it was important to use the lessons learned and questions to delve into my own life to make sure that I learned from these women of the past.  I know I have learned from these women, so I can be a “good” girl.

This is a book that all women should read, so they know that God is still there for them.  Women can learn from the past to do better in the future.
